A tap holder is a tool holder that has a tap attached for making internal threads and can be mounted on a machining center, milling machine, or upright drill press.
Tap holder shanks include MT shanks for upright balls, NT shanks and straight shanks for general-purpose milling machines, and BT shanks or HSK standards, etc. for NCs and machining centers.
There are types with a variety of functions which can be selected according to purpose, such as a set torque function to prevent tap breakage, a clutch reversing function for lifting, a function to automatically reverse the clutch to a fixed position when machining, a float function, etc. to correct slight lateral misalignment.
Note that many tap holders use a tap collet for each tap size, and some tap collets have a torque limit on the tap collet side.
